JASON STOPA'S FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN TURKEY AT SEVİL DOLMACI ISTANBUL

Sevil Dolmacı Istanbul presents "Interior Monument", the first solo exhibition of American contemporary artist, writer and curator Jason Stopa in Turkey. Using a contemporary language in which analog and digital are intertwined in his works, the artist's special selection for the exhibition will be on view between January 30 and March 1.

Jason Stopa creates works that question the relationship between color, light and space, using a contemporary language that intertwines analogue and digital. The artist's production process is characterized by oil paint applied on canvas using large brush strokes and transparent layers. In this way, the viewer realizes not only a digital creation, but also the physical presence and importance of the painting.

Stopa creates works that blur the viewer's perception of foreground and background by adopting the understanding that painting is "color as light and light as space". Stopa considers both the colors and the space of a painting as part of the light and reflects it to the viewer's perception. In his paintings, the artist includes not only colors and forms but also light itself as a structural element.

In the exhibition "Interior Monument", the themes of Stopa's work are linked to the personal history of abstract painting and the artist. The artist believes that the paintings formally relate to the individual. Jason Stopa, who researches art history and the history of architecture, is inspired by the never-built project of Archizoom, a Radical Architecture group that attracted attention with their project No-Stop City. Interior Monument references the design of a city without borders, stretching to infinity, in search of freedom and ecological sustainability. The paintings begin with a grid, then the artist disrupts its internal logic with arabesque forms and intuitive decisions. Stopa works develop and diversify around this logic.

She also uses open window-like motifs in some of her works on paper. These motifs originate from window forms in early 20th century French paintings. The window, as both a physical and virtual element, questions its potential to conceal and direct light. The main function of windows in Stopa's work is to both clarify and obscure visual perception.

Stopa likens the geometric forms in his paintings to two-dimensional sculptures. Using ornamentation and framing in most of his works, he explores the tension and/or harmony between geometry and emotional form. In addition, his striking, bright and vibrant color palette comes from an artistic pedigree that stretches from Henri Matisse to Bob Thomson and Stanley Whitney.

Sevil Dolmacı Istanbul invites art lovers to explore the artist's inner world and colorful utopian spaces with Jason Stopa's exhibition, The Inner Monument. The works in the exhibition, which will take place at Villa Ipranosyan from January 30 to March 1, push the viewer to constantly ask questions, to rethink and rethink what they see and perceive.
