Sevil Dolmaci Istanbul, American graffiti artist and painter Chris DAZE Ellis's first solo exhibition in Turkey "People and Places"between November 24, 2023 and January 31, 2024. The exhibition consists of the works Ellis produced in his studio in the United States and the works he produced in Istanbul in 2022 as part of the Sevil Dolmacı Art Residency Program.
In the 1980s, among the street artists supported by Andy Warhol Chris DAZE EllisDAZE has collaborated with some of today's legendary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Futura and has participated in group exhibitions. DAZE captures everyday scenes that he is a part of or witnesses in everyday life and conveys his observations and impressions through his art. The exhibition, as the title suggests, is part of DAZE's "Big Apple" reflects the people he observes on the buses, subways and streets of the legendary city of New York and the places he passes through during the day.
DAZE, "People and Places" exhibition invites the viewer on a subway journey that looks pleasant from the outside but is no less dysfunctional and chaotic. On this journey, for example, passengers may find themselves directed to a place that cannot be described as pleasant. One of the most striking images that the viewer sees and will remember is the empty subway seat, which the artist depicts in his works to make the viewer feel part of the subway journey. DAZE creates the characters in his works by compiling images of people he passes on the street that leave a trace in his subconscious or people he sees during his journey.
In addition to his canvas works with expressionist brushstrokes and intense use of paint, the artist also exhibits ceramic works inspired by Istanbul when he visited Turkey for the first time in 2022. Painted in his own style, the ceramic pots reflect the artist's dynamic imagery and color palette.
DAZE applies paint in a systematic process, allowing transparent layers of color to form in areas where thick brushstrokes are applied. Using a mixed technique of acrylic paint, spray paint, charcoal and bronze, he makes it possible for the abstract and the representational to exist in the same work of art and complement each other.
November 24, 2023 - January 31, 2024 at Sevil Dolmacı Istanbul, presented to the appreciation of art lovers "People and Places", viewers are invited to be part of and/or witness DAZE's daily journey in New York City and to remember their own daily journeys in the cities they live in or to imagine what kind of stories, people and places they would encounter if they were traveling.
