Robert Janitz (b. 1962, Asfeld, Germany) is an artist who develops his artistic practice at the intersection of painting and visual language. He currently divides his time and work between Mexico City and New York. Janitz studied Art History and Sanskrit at the University of Marburg in Germany. He was a faculty member at Paris VIII University and the Cherbourg School of Fine Arts from 1994 to 2008. Janitz began to gain recognition with his solo exhibition at Galerie Valleix in 1996 and has since held over thirty solo exhibitions in cities such as Paris, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Istanbul, Seoul, and Mexico City. Janitz studied Art History and Sanskrit at the University of Marburg in Germany. Between 1994 and 2008, he served as a faculty member at Paris VIII University and the École des Beaux-Arts de Cherbourg.
Janitz first came to prominence with his solo exhibition at Galerie Valleix in 1996, and since then he has presented more than thirty solo exhibitions in cities such as Paris, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Istanbul, Seoul, and Mexico City. He made his debut in the Latin American art scene through a simultaneous program held in Mexico City. His recent exhibitions include Casa Gilardi (2021), König Gallery in Berlin (2020), Kunstmuseum Winterthur in Switzerland (2019), and CANADA in New York (2018). His upcoming exhibitions include the MAZ Museum in Guadalajara and the Museo Anahuacalli in Mexico City in 2022.
One of Janitz's solo exhibitions is Labyrinth, her first exhibition in Turkey, which opened at Sevil Dolmaci Art Gallery in 2021. In December 2021, she had another solo exhibition at Canada NY Gallery. In 2022, she will exhibit new works at König Gallery Seoul. Her artistic practice continues to evolve, including a visual vocabulary that she began to develop in Turkey.
His monograph Made in New York was published by Distanz Verlag in 2020. Janitz’s works have been featured in notable publications such as Contemporary Painting (Thames & Hudson, 2021) and Frozen Gesture (Hirmer, 2019). His works are held in significant collections including the Carole Server Collection, Collezione Maramotti, the Hall Art Foundation, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Represented by galleries such as Canada (New York), Sevil Dolmacı (Istanbul), König (Berlin, London, Seoul), and Saenger Galería (Mexico City), Janitz continues to engage audiences worldwide. After living in New York for more than a decade, he relocated to Mexico City in 2020.
