Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery will be presenting South Korean artist Cody Choi's exhibition between March 2-April 15, 2023. Down Side is Heavy is pleased to present his solo exhibition. Named after the neon installation in the exhibition Down Side is Heavyis Cody Choi's first solo exhibition in Turkey.
Cody Choi (b.1961) studied Sociology at Korea University and later at the Art Center College of Design in California, USA. At the age of 22, Choi moved to the US with his family, and the prejudice against Asian cultural identity he encountered in the US was reflected in his work. Being a foreigner in America on the subject. He has worked as a faculty member at New York University and Hongik University, Seoul. His exhibition "Cody Choi: Culture Cuts" traveled to many countries between 2015-17 and received great attention. Choi represented his country at the Venice Biennale in 2017. He currently lives and works in Seoul.
The main body of the exhibition consists of the artist's paintings on marble using a special technique and depicting floral compositions influenced by traditional Korean painting. Choi's other works in the exhibition are influenced by "tautology". In this series titled "Color Painting / Tautology", the same truth is spoken in different words, creating an illusionary effect on the viewer.
Since the 1980s, Cody Choi's works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in South Korea and the USA, and his solo exhibitions have been held in many museums around the world, including PKM Gallery in Korea, Meyer Riegger Gallery in Germany, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, (Cheongju, Korea), Musée d'Art Contemporain de Marseille (Marseille, France), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
