After a five-year hiatus, Haluk Akakçe is back in Istanbul with three important video works and a comprehensive exhibition summarizing his five-year production. The exhibition titled 'Made in Love' will take place between March 3-22 at Akaretler Sıraevler No:37-39 in collaboration with Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery and Akaretler.
The multidisciplinary artist Haluk Akakçe's sound and video installation 'They Called it Love, I Call it Madness', which covered 4-6 blocks on the streets of Las Vegas in 2006, and his huge, never-before-seen paintings are among the important elements of this exhibition. Akakçe's videos examine the human relationship with technology, sometimes referencing biology, geometry and architecture. Akakçe's video works are often accompanied by musical compositions, either specially composed or adapted from an existing classical work. The hypnotic quality of the computer-generated images is emphasized more strongly by the soundtracks of his films. The video 'They Call it Love, I Call it Madness' and the videos 'White on White' and 'Mr. Butterfly' are the other works in the exhibition. Akakçe's videos and paintings are accompanied by his recent cut-out wall works, sculptures and works on paper.
In 1993, Haluk Akakçe graduated from Bilkent University's Department of Interior Architecture, and in 1995 he started at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The following year, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he went on an exchange program, and completed his master's program at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1997. Akakçe held her first solo exhibition in Chicago and continued her work in London and New York for many years.
Akakçe has exhibited in some of the world's leading museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art (2002), PS-1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City (New York 2001), New Museum NY 2002, Tate Britain (London 2004), Istanbul Modern (Istanbul 2009). Among the important biennials Akakçe has participated in are the 6th Istanbul Biennial in 1999, curated by Paolo Colombo, and the 25th Sao Paolo Biennial in 2002 with the theme Metropolitan Iconographies.
Akakçe, who produces projects on a global scale, meets art lovers with his new exhibition 'Made in Love' on March 3-22 after a long break.
