SEVİL DOLMACI ART GALLERY HOSTS THE FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN TURKEY BY ROSS BLECKNER, ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF WORLD ART HISTORY

In parallel with the 17th Istanbul Biennial, Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery is proud to host "Angels in Your Head", the first solo exhibition of American artist Ross Bleckner in Turkey. The works of Bleckner, who became one of the most prominent names of the period with his courageous works on AIDS in the mid-80s, was invited to the Guggenheim Museum for a retrospective exhibition in the 90s and became the only artist to open a retrospective in his 40s, will meet art lovers between September 19 and October 22. The exhibition is designed by Büro Koray Duman.

Ross Bleckner (1949-), who has taken his place as one of the touchstones of the world art history in the most important museums from Europe to America and the Far East, became a pioneer for other contemporary artists by defying Neo Expressionism and Minimalism with the abstract painting style he created since the early 1980s. In his Stripe paintings of the early 1980s, he rehabilitated abstract art in a sense by softening the influence of Op Art. In the mid-80s, the artist produced very courageous works on AIDS and became one of the most prominent names of the period. In the 90s, at the age of 46, he was invited to the Guggenheim Museum for a retrospective exhibition, becoming the only artist to open a retrospective in his 40s.

Ross Bleckner created the series "Memorials" as a reaction to the AIDS crisis, which has been increasing its impact day by day since the mid-1980s. Using ghostly, translucent images on a dark gray, illusionistic background, Bleckner refers to the disappearing gay community. Even the titles of the paintings he produced during this period reflect the number of people who had died from AIDS. In the following years, Bleckner did not change the melancholic taste of his works, and in the 1990s, with his "Cell" / "Cell" paintings, he continued to depict the microscopic aspects of the body, referring to diseased human cells.

Having worked with Mary Boone gallery for many years, Bleckner is now represented by Petzel gallery. The artist, who will reveal his recent works in Turkey with the exhibition "Angels in Your Head" at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery, will be with art lovers in Istanbul for the opening of the exhibition.
