Thomas Schönauer

Thomas Schönauer is a German contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, painting, drawing, and public art. His work investigates the relationship between humanity, nature, and technology, with a particular focus on the concepts of movement, energy, and transformation. Combining organic forms with industrial materials, Schönauer seeks to reveal the interaction between the visible realities of the physical world and the invisible forces that shape it. Working primarily with stainless steel, bronze, and other industrial media, he approaches sculpture not as a static object but as a dynamic structure that continuously engages with both space and the viewer.

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1953, Schönauer developed his artistic practice within the influential cultural environment surrounding the Düsseldorf Art Academy. While his early works incorporated figurative elements, his practice gradually evolved toward a more abstract and conceptual language. Drawing inspiration from science, philosophy, and observations of nature, he has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary that explores energy flows, cosmological structures, and questions of human consciousness. His interdisciplinary approach continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary sculpture.

Internationally recognized, Schönauer has exhibited extensively in museums, galleries, and public spaces across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He is particularly known for his large-scale public sculptures, which engage directly with architectural environments and transform them into immersive experiences. Through fluid forms and the reflective surfaces of stainless steel, his works redefine the relationship between space, light, movement, and perception.

Schönauer’s artistic practice invites viewers to reconsider humanity’s place within an increasingly complex and technologically driven world. Using sculpture as both a physical and metaphorical field of inquiry, he creates works that make visible the connections between matter and energy, order and chaos, and the individual and the collective consciousness. Through this ongoing exploration, Thomas Schönauer has established himself as a distinctive voice within contemporary international art.
