Michael John Kelly's abstract works seek to explore objectivity in abstraction, imagining objects with their own intelligence and personality. His art practice begins with a substrate of broad, strong brushstrokes. Then, she adds layers of collage on top of this foundation. She creates new and unexpected forms by digitally printing images created on an iPad onto canvas, tearing these prints and collaging them into her original work. Kelly's abstract works seek the sublime in an increasingly post-human world. While adhering to traditional painting techniques, she integrates digital tools into her practice, creating new beings and forms that seem to be discovered. Her work reflects the chaotic beauty of an ever-changing world.
She received her master's degree in painting from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). Her art residencies in Berlin and Istanbul have played an important role in blending traditional painting techniques with technological experimentation. Kelly has exhibited internationally in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Basel, Basel, London, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Istanbul, and continues to work in Los Angeles.
