Jason Stopa (b. 1983) is a contemporary American artist, writer and curator known for his abstract paintings. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and holds a BA from Indiana University Bloomington and an MA from Pratt Institute. Stopa teaches as an Adjunct Professor at Pratt Institute, The School of Visual Arts and Fashion Institute of Technology, and publishes an academic journal for Columbia University. Stopa creates abstract paintings that reference utopian architecture. Using thin layers of oil paint, he likens geometric forms to two-dimensional sculptures. Using ornamentation and framing in most of his works, the artist explores the tension between geometry and emotional form. He draws inspiration for his colors from an artistic genealogy ranging from Henri Matisse to Bob Thomson to Stanley Whitney.
